Cabinet installation page 4

The next step for me is the upper wall cabinets. If there is a full height cabinet such as a double wall oven or a pantry cabinet I will set this cabinet first. If it is integrated into the base cabinets it will be installed with them keeping it even with the bottom corner of the face frame of the adjacent cabinets and check it with a level to make sure it is plumb. Once the full size cabinet is screwed in place I measure the height of the upper cabinet next to it. I then measure down from the top of the full height cabinet and mark a reference line on the wall. I then measure up from the standard size base cabinet and get the distance between the upper and base cabinets. This should come out to a standard 19 ½-inches. This leaves room for a 1-1/2 inch countertop and gives me 18 inches finished space between the two. I then take some scrap lumber and cut a couple pieces 2 inches wide by 19-½ -inches long. I will put the two pieces together and cut them at the same time so I know they are exactly the same length. I will drill a hole about an inch from the end on these pieces and screw them vertically to the wall at the location where I want to set an upper cabinet. If I put the screw at the bottom it will be hidden by the countertop when it is installed.

I will use these to support the upper cabinets while I work on them. This has two purposes, first with the support underneath I only have to worry about the cabinet tipping out and also if I use the same supports over on each upper cabinet I know they will be level with the base cabinets and the distance between them will be exactly the same all the way through the room. This will make the tile setter very happy.

It is important to mention a couple things about a double wall oven cabinet. First, they can be very heavy and awkward to handle so I always get some help moving them around. If it is located in a corner and the adjacent wall has a light switch on it I will add enough filler to pull it away from the wall enough that the oven doors are sure to clear the light switch. I will also check the oven installation instructions and make sure the electrical service is in the right location.

Another thing to consider on a cabinet that is full height and is a face frame cabinet that has both a base cabinet and an upper wall cabinet located against it, because the base cabinets will be attached face frame to face frame and the upper cabinet will be behind the face frame of the full height cabinet, it will be offset by the overhang of the full height cabinet face frame. So therefore if the face frame overhangs the side of the cabinet side by ¼-inch, that ¼-inch must be added in filler to the upper cabinet to make it line up with the base cabinet below.

The wall cabinet is installed in the same way as the base cabinets. One thing to keep in mind is that the screws will be more visible than in the base cabinets. To lessen the visual impact I will locate a screw at the top and bottom of the cabinet at the location of each wall stud and keep the screw holes a consistent distance from the top or bottom on the inside of the box. If the cabinet manufacturer has not provided a cap to cover the screw head I usually will use a trim washer the same color as the flat head screws I am using. These will provide a better look than just a screw head and a wider grip.
